Dear Ethics KEG,
The Quarterly Ethics KEG Zoom meeting was held on June 1, 2023. Three main topics were discussed:
- A suggestion was made for generating a survey of the SCCM Membership concerning the composition and utilization of Ethics Committees or Ethics Consultation Services. All KEG members are invited to collaborate on drafting the survey on the Ethics KEG website, After the initial survey is finalized, we will distribute it to the general membership on SCCM. Information from this and subsequent surveys may be incorporated into a submission at a future Congress or a publication. This is a great chance to start a new project from the very beginning, so please consider participating! LINK TO THREAD
- We identified an opportunity for collaboration with the Palliative Care KEG to explore areas of common concern regarding not only End-of-Life but prior-to-End-of-Life care for critically-ill patients and families. To further pursue this, we are going to invite the members of the Palliative Care KEG to join the next Ethics KEG quarterly Zoom meeting in September.
- Topics to explore for possible presentations at future Congress meetings were discussed, including:
- Moral distress resulting from instances where Legal and Ethical interests do not align.
- Formal Training and Education in Ethics for health care providers
- Broadening the scope of "conflict of interest" considerations to include acts of omission and other areas that are not typically included
