Hi everyone! In our June 1st Ethics KEG meeting, we recognized just how little we know about how clinical ethics consultation is provided in ICUs across the country. What sort of ethics consultation resources do SCCM members have access to at their different facilities? How often and for what sort of problems do they request ethics consults? Who provides the consultation? How many SCCM members participate in providing ethics consultation, and what sort of training/expertise do they have?

Those questions are just a start. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in developing some survey questions for our membership. If we develop a set of questions (as well as a rationale for asking them), we could potentially investigate the possibility for an officially sanctioned survey, or just figure out a different way to try to sample widely.

Feel free to reply here or email me at sderrington@chla.usc.edu.

There have been previous surveys from the other side of this coin. Let me ask my ethics consultant friends if we can get access to the survey they used. I still think surveying SCCM is a good idea, but always better to not have to create an instrument from scratch.

    Hey Sabrina,

I LOVE this idea. I'd be happy to help with a survey. One of the PICO questions for the EOL Guidelines panel deals with ethics and moral distress consultation. It would be great if we could include access to moral distress consultation in the survey. Beth Epstein may be interested in joining us on this project, and likely has experience in this sort of survey work. Happy to discuss.

    Awesome idea!!!

    All the best,

    Mary Faith

Great to see interest in Sabrina's post about what was discussed at the last Ethics KEG meeting! Would be interesting to see how many SCCM members have formal training/education in Ethics (advanced degree, clinical fellowship, health care ethics certification), what legal / risk management / chaplain service resources our members are able to access, etc. (Do we have any SCCM members with training in law/theology?)

In addition to Claudia Drath from SCCM, there were 5 KEG members who attended this virtual session -  hopefully we will see more attendance and participation at the next one!

We also discussed having a joint meeting with the Palliative Medicine KEG and Claudia is going to look into arranging this.

    Best wishes,

    -Preeti
