  • 1.  Ultrasound for PIV Insertion

    Posted 01-22-2024 09:02

    Good morning everyone!

I am hoping to poll the group on what your institutions implement for training nurses on the use of ultrasound in placing PIVs! Specifically, what are your training requirements for nurses to be deemed competent or "independent?"

Looking at implementing a program in collaboration with our VAT team for my ICU nurses.

    Thank you!

Nurses attend a class, and then have to place 3 or 5 supervised by someone credentialed to insert PIV's under US.  They are only allowed to use cross sectional views.

Our hospital has decided to start with the ICU nurses.  This bothers some of them b/c then they get called to the floor to help, so many have chosen not to get trained or credentialed.

I created a cheap model to practice PIV insertions.  Cost me 1.25 plus tax at the dollar store, and will work for hundreds if not thousands of practice attempts.  There has been some pushback but the nursing hierarchy is on board.  I hope this will help spread the training faster to all floors, not just the ICU's.  Email me offline if you're interested in my model, but regardless, some type of training (online, class, one-on-one) on how to use US, practice, then some # (3, 5, whatever) observed insertions on real patients.
