So I did not make it to SCCM this year. (Was actually working). I am putting this discussion tread out there because I am concerned that the provision MCS and ECMO should be an integral part of what a critical docs does as part of his profession and do not think SCCM is vested in this type of care for our critically ill patients.  This type of care is all about ARDS and shock and isnt that part of our expertise. I am hearing there were not many if any talks on basic ecmo and MCS devices.(excluding  the pre Congress session)   I notice that that ACC now has their own section of critical care cardiology and are making great head way into what I would think is SCCM territory.  That section is also getting big money from industry because of MCS.  It looks like ACCP has finally become ECMO friendly also, now that ECMO is part of the ARDS guidelines.  MY point is what is going on with SCCM as far as MCS and ECMO is concerned? Just because SCCM has a pre conference that is more about how you do ECMO and little science discussion or didactics, does not necessarily give us the position of experts and leadership in ecmo . (having the course driven by ELSO does not give SCCM a leadership position)   It does not seem to me the society, nor the meeting is vested in ECMO and MCS and is letting other societies make it their expertise. CCM is very active in publishing articles on ECMO, although not so much about MCS, yet at our national meeting there was little to no sessions on some of the controversies or updated education based on recent articles in CCM. ECMO and MCS is here to stay and it is not just done in major academic institutions any more. It is time for SCCM via it educational program to become more of a leader in educating our society members in the provision of ECMO and MCS, and making ECMO and MCS a qualification of a critical care provider

Love to hear some opinions on this topic
