SCCM encourages sections, committees, task forces, knowledge education groups (KEGs), and individual members to submit proposals for Society-commissioned manuscripts. Proposals are accepted year-round and provide an opportunity to address emerging issues in critical care or identify knowledge gaps.

How the Process Works
- Identify a Topic
- Consider areas where new evidence, expert consensus, educational content, or policy recommendations would benefit the critical care community.
- Groups are encouraged to discuss potential manuscript ideas within their respective groups.
- Review the Submission Requirements
- SCCM provides a submission checklist that outlines all required information, word limits, and reviewer expectations.
- Reviewing the checklist before beginning the application can help streamline the submission process and ensure all necessary information is included.
- Submit a Manuscript Proposal
- Proposals are submitted through SCCM's online manuscript proposal portal.
- The submission form includes nine sections designed to gather information about the proposed topic, rationale, scope, anticipated impact, and proposed author group.
- Proposal Review
- Submitted proposals undergo review through SCCM's manuscript evaluation process by the Executive Committee of Council.
- The Executive Committee reviewers assess factors such as the significance of the topic, alignment with SCCM's mission and strategic priorities, potential impact on the field, and overlap with existing SCCM publications or initiatives.
- Approval and Manuscript Development
- If approved, SCCM staff will work with the proposal team to initiate manuscript development and guide the next steps in the publication process.
- Depending on the manuscript type, this may include author appointments, timeline development, conflict-of-interest review, and coordination with SCCM publication leadership.
- Each approved proposal will have an SCCM Council liaison assigned as a resource to the writing group.
How Groups Can Participate
Individuals are encouraged to:
- Identify subject matter experts who may be interested in participating.
- Collaborate with other SCCM groups on interdisciplinary topics.
- Consider topics that align with SCCM strategic initiatives, emerging science, education, quality improvement, or health policy.
