Subject: Expansion of the CPT Editorial Panel

The American Medical Association (AMA) is pleased to announce the expansion of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel.  Specifically, the AMA has added four additional seats to the Panel, at the recommendation of the Panel.  The Panel is the governing body charged with the ongoing maintenance of the CPT code set.

CPT Editorial Panel members provide unparalleled expertise and knowledge to the process that sustains CPT as a preeminent medical coding set. Panel members volunteer their time in their professional capacity to maintain the CPT content and support the coding demands of a modern health care system.

A rigorous editorial process run by the Panel keeps the CPT code set current with advances in medical science and technology so it can fulfill its vital role as the trusted language of medicine today and the code to its future. Expanding the Panel from 17 to 21 members will increase the expertise available to the Panel as CPT content advances to reflect the emergence of digital health, precision medicine and augmented intelligence.

Among the four new members are:

    • The addition of two Panel member seats for medical specialty societies
    • The addition of one seat filled by a nominee from either an umbrella organization that represents private healthcare insurers or a medical specialty society
    • The addition of one at-large Organizational Member seat.  Requirements/qualifications for this member include:
      • That the nominating organization has historically participated in the CPT code change application, formal review, or Panel deliberation processes and previously did not have the ability to nominate Panel membership (i.e., not an umbrella organization that represents private healthcare insurers, or  a medical specialty society.) ]
      • That any person nominated shall be a physician knowledgeable in the areas of medical or healthcare procedure nomenclature and coding and committed to maintaining the CPT code set in accordance with the highest professional standards

A call for nominees for these new Panel seats will begin this summer.  All nominees are subject to approval by the AMA Board of Trustees and must meet the nomination qualifications set forth by the AMA.  These qualifications include that appointed Panel members participate independently, are bound by prescribed confidentiality and conflict of interest policies and represent their independent professional judgement and not the interests of the organization that nominated them. All new Panel members will be observers at the February 2022 Panel meeting and will vote beginning May 2022.  To stagger the terms, two of the four members will be randomly selected to have an initial two-year term.  The remaining members will have an initial four-year term.

The Panel supports diversity, equity, and inclusion in its members and its policies.  The AMA encourages highly motivated qualified candidates of all backgrounds that meet the criteria outlined for Panel membership to apply for these positions.
