    Dear Colleague:

Data science lies at the convergence of big data, artificial intelligence, and domain knowledge.  It seems very likely that critical care medicine will be transformed as the methods of data science are increasingly leveraged to help address problems in classification, mechanistic modeling, detection and diagnosis, trajectory and outcome prediction, treatment decision-making, operations and healthcare delivery, and patient safety and quality.

It comes as no surprise that data science is gaining traction within the SCCM. We have seen a  growing number of dedicated sessions at the Society's Annual Congress. We have established the Data Science in Intensive Care Knowledge Education Group (KEG) with 158 members and many compelling sessions devoted to new research in this field. The SCCM Discovery group has identified data science as a key pillar of research in intensive care.

Many feel that the time has come for the SCCM to create its own Data Science Section. This group will work to promote multispeciality/interdisciplinary scientific, educational and clinical programs which align with the Society's core vision and missions.

The SCCM requirements for the creation of a new Section include securing signatures of 200 SCCM members who support the initiative. You can do this electronically via the following SCCM link: https://forms.office.com/r/G37uDXzhcE

We look forward to working with you on this new initiative!
