    Hello Ethics Friends,

I'm attaching a recent New York Times article on rationing of ECMO during COVID. I thought it was a very well written article, but I also think it underemphasized the idea that ECMO is a scarce resource even in non-COVID times. At Columbia we can support quite a lot of patients on ECMO at once but we are still very (appropriately) careful about who we offer it to.

We have also never taken anyone off ECMO without permission from the patient or the family. We have discussed attempting time-limited trials of ECMO but haven't been very successful. I'm curious if other centers have had similar experiences?
